  • Product Info

Black Emmer is a rare ancient grain, also known as Farro Nero. The word “farro” comes from pharaoh, as this grain was originally grown in ancient Egypt. When the Roman Empire expanded there, they brought this grain back to the continent, and it became known as farro nero the “black grain of the Pharaohs.”

The husks of each kernel of wheat are a deep purple-black, but the grains themselves are a creamy sand color. Our organic Black Emmer is high in vitamins and minerals. and has a deep, earthy flavor, whether you mill it into flour, or use the whole berries in grain bowls or breakfast bowls.

Great Flavor

These have almost an earthy flavor so I milled them, mixed with some durum and made pasta. I paired it with a mushroom cream sauce and it was fantastic! Better than any restaurant pasta I've had in a long time. Can't wait to try it for friends.

Go Bowling with Emmer!

Topped with lightly cooked vegetables—farmers market baby turnips, onions, carrots, Napa cabbage, & cilantro—these emmer berries provided a chewy, nutty foundation for a bowl that was finished off with a spicy pepper sauce. The crunch of the veggies and the chew of the emmer kept us bowling for a tremendously satisfying don't-want-to-stop meal.

Black Emmer.. added to my inventory

I am a home baker with an outdoor wood fired oven. Since 2014 I have been experimenting with Janie's Mill grains. For structure I use Glenn and Red Fife, and for flavor variations of Warthog, Turkey Red, and now Black Emmer. I love the aroma and earthiness it adds to my Rustic Sourdough Loaves. Tested it with a small 1.5lb sample and just received a 25 lb bag. YES a winner. My breads now are now a combo of Ancient, Heirloom and Modern Grains... a Blend of the Ages!

So Sweet!

Wow! These make an incredibly sweet, delicious loaf with no added sugar--a perfect breakfast bread. Like spelt but even sweeter. I made a 100% extraction sourdough loaf in a pan using Breadtopia's whole-grain spelt recipe, and it turned out amazing.

A little goes a long way

This grain is very robust and mixed with other grains it makes a hearty bread. I love this grain. Orders are processed very quickly and sent out. I was surprised how fast it came.
