  • Product Info

Black Emmer is a rare ancient grain, also known as Farro Nero. The word “farro” comes from pharaoh, as this grain was originally grown in ancient Egypt. When the Roman Empire expanded there, they brought this grain back to the continent, and it became known as farro nero the “black grain of the Pharaohs.”

The husks of each kernel of wheat are a deep purple-black, but the grains themselves are a creamy sand color. Our organic Black Emmer is high in vitamins and minerals. and has a deep, earthy flavor, whether you mill it into flour, or use the whole berries in grain bowls or breakfast bowls.

Emmer berries

These berries are what I expected, fresh and tasty. I've prepared them as farro with sauteed apples and yogurt.
I've also made a pudding with them.

Delicious and nutritious

I have loved farro since I first had farro salad in Italy years ago. What I bought at grocery stores was processed, but Janie's Mill black emmer berries are the.real thing with the distinctive flavor and texture that I love. I cook batches in my instant pot, freeze in small servings and use in salads, soups, stews and stir fries.

Black Emmer Wheat, not just for eating!

I planted this wheat last fall as a winter wheat cover crop for soil building in my northern Illinois garden. It grew tall and was beautiful, just as I expected. I didn’t harvest the grain, but the birds did. I use the straw in my garden, which is another reason that tall is good!
