Organic Spelt Berries

$6.25 Regular Price
  • Product Info

Spelt is an ancient grain that was domesticated around 5,000BC. It has a wholesome taste and robust nutrient profile. It is particularly rich in important minerals such as zinc, iron, phosphorus, copper, and magnesium.

Our whole organic spelt berries may be used as you would wheat berries, in soups, stews, grain bowls and breakfast bowls.

You may also mill the whole spelt berries into a very versatile flour that may be substituted for All-Purpose flour in cookies, crackers, quick breads, cakes, and pancakes. Spelt's high enzymatic activity also makes it an excellent flour to feed your sourdough starter.

Outstanding service

Pleased with your service. Maybe I will make future purchases. Deuteronomy 8:8 mentions wheat and barley. If grains are so bad, why would God give us grains? Because He knows what he is doing and God loves us!

Not my favorite

I’ve used spelt berries for about 10 years and have had many opportunities to try out different sources. Recently even more have become available, since there has been a trend toward milling at home and ancient grains. I like to try them out and especially like free shipping! My first batch from Janie’s was very full of Velvetleaf seeds (an invasive weed), I was told they were morning glory seeds (which also can be invasive, at least here in VA). At first I was sorting them but at the rate we use spelt (50 lbs in probably 40 days) it’s a lot to pick out so I let them know. They sent me a second batch of spelt, and this batch, while very clean, plump and fresh, has not been able to form gluten well at all. I will be able to use it in muffins and such, like one would use soft white, but I’ll be picking through the first batch I received, in order to bake bread. If you get the seedy batch, be aware that if you toss those into your chicken feed, if they don’t eat them all, you may end up with a challenging weed situation in your yard.
